A Closer Look: The latest Paid To Party Column

Barbecue, blue sky lure crowd

Rain kept many people away from the Blues, Brews & BBQ festival last Friday, but on Saturday the folks showed up in full force. That night, several hundred people stood in the parking lot across from Rock Bottom Brewery dancing to Delbert McClinton's boogie-woogie music.
At least 100,000 attended the two-day event, highlighted by a barbecue cook-off and performances by McClinton, Acoustic Syndicate and others. Despite the rain, Charlotte Center City Partners spokeswoman Moira Quinn said all of the scheduled acts were still able to perform last Friday.
The festival worked well in its new location, on Tryon Street between Sixth to Ninth streets.

Again, Jameson lazily cut n pastes blog entries and uses it as a column. What a scam! Anyway speaking of scams..... 100,000 people at "Blues, Brews & BBQ"?!?!? Bullshit! Now I know Tonya didn't come up with this laughably bogus #, (apparently Moira Quinn did) but reprinting this LIE - is just as irresponsible. For example, The Festival In The Park organizers expect 85,000 people over the course of it's 4 day period. Now if You've ever been, you know that event draws huge crowds each day. Multiply that huge crowd by 4 and that's 85,000. Imagine all those people at once + 15,000 more braving the rain in uptown to sample homemade beer and listen to Delbert McClinton.. Yeahh. Didn't happen, impossible, horseshit. Stop printing this nonsense.

We're No. 1! We're No. 1!

Sing this to the tune of Queen's "We are the Champions": "We are the brew masters, my friends ..."I predicted the Charlotte Observer's Eye/Carolina Nightlife team would spank the competition in the Blues, Brews & BBQ media beer contest. And, of course, we did. (OK, we won by one vote, but a win is a win, baby!)
Big thanks to George Allen and the folks at Carolina Beer & Beverage for making our concept -- an Oktoberfest called Five o'clock Now -- the best beer ever.

You won a homemade beer contest. At a lame festival. Big fuckin' deal! How does this relate to the "Charlotte Party Scene"? It doesn't. Nobody cares. Nobody cares about 99.9% of the shit you write about, but this doesn't stop you. In the name of diversity and affirmative action you carry on! Never one to miss on on an opportunity to throw in another gay reference, Tonya even mentions "We're Are The Champions". Oh brother. Besides, how can you sing "We're #1" to the tune of "we are the champions"?

Petra's opening weekend

Petra's, a cabaret and piano bar in Plaza-Midwood, finally opened last weekend.
There was a line out the door despite heavy rains last Friday night. Packing the small club were friends of owner Petra Fugger and creative directors Robb and sister Connie Huddleston and Chris Hollar.
A cute waitress named Autumn sang "Unchained Melody," and later, an adorable waiter named Jason sang "Imagine." Between their solos, pianist Nathan Hefner played tunes while brave audience members took turns on the mic.
Petra's is tastefully decorated, with dark hues, mirrors and chandeliers. The staff and patrons were friendly. It's the kind of place that could easily become a regular hangout.

If you read the Observer, or Charlotte.com, or Tonya's blog regularly, you might wonder if she's on this place's payroll, since she's been tirelessly promoting the damn place since early spring. Why, you ask? because it's a gay bar. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that other business owners who aren't gay, don't get this kind of press without paying for it. Sort of makes you wonder if a newspaper column is going to be used to promote lame clubs , regular hetero clubs (the ones not owned by celebrities and Dale Dr. should be given such lavish praise. We're sick of your "pro-gay and the hell with everyone else" agenda, Tonya. Boo.

That's it. There were some additional bullet points in the column, but that's it. I sure would like to know how she's parlayed this lame schtick into a full time job that pays a living wage. Not that a straight white person could get away with it, but that's the Observer for you.
